ADHD vs Anxiety: How to Tell the Difference

Difficulty concentrating is one of the most common reasons people seek mental health treatment. But poor focus does not always mean ADHD. Anxiety can create many of the same challenges.
Individuals with ADHD often struggle with attention regardless of the situation. They may have difficulty staying organized, managing time, following through on tasks, or maintaining focus even when they want to pay attention.
Individuals with anxiety may struggle to focus because their mind is occupied by worries, fears, or racing thoughts. Concentration often improves when anxiety symptoms improve.
The two conditions can also occur together. In fact, many people with ADHD also experience anxiety. This can make diagnosis more complicated and increase frustration when symptoms are not fully understood.
Signs that anxiety may be contributing to concentration problems include excessive worry, physical tension, difficulty relaxing, panic symptoms, avoidance behaviors, and overthinking.
Signs that ADHD may be contributing include chronic disorganization, forgetfulness, procrastination, impulsivity, poor time management, and lifelong attention difficulties.
Because symptoms often overlap, a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation can help identify the underlying causes and guide treatment decisions.
