Why We Don’t Bill Insurance: The Benefits of Private-Pay Psychiatry

Private Pay Psychiatry

It is the most common frustration in mental health care today: You finally decide to seek help, you call a provider on your insurance list, and you hear the dreaded phrase:

“Our next available appointment is in four months.”

Or perhaps you finally get an appointment, but you feel like just another number in a high-volume system, navigating a maze of bureaucracy just to get your prescription filled.

At New Insights Behavioral Health, we decided to build a practice that works differently. We operate as a private-pay (out-of-network) practice.

We know that navigating healthcare costs can be stressful, and the idea of paying upfront can feel daunting. However, operating outside of the insurance model allows us to offer a level of access, privacy, and focus that is becoming impossible in the traditional system.

Here is why choosing a private-pay psychiatrist may be the best investment you make for your mental health.

1. Access When You Need It (Not Months Later)

Mental health struggles don’t operate on a 9-to-5 schedule, and they certainly don’t wait for “the next available slot in October.”

Insurance-based practices are often volume-based. To stay profitable with low reimbursement rates, they must overload their providers with hundreds of patients. This leads to massive bottlenecks.

By operating as a private practice, we cap our patient load. This means we can typically offer initial evaluations within 10 days. If you are struggling with severe anxiety, depression, or ADHD, getting help this week versus next season can change the trajectory of your life.

2. Clinical Freedom & Personalized Care

Insurance companies often rely on rigid protocols, sometimes requiring providers to follow “step therapy”—forcing patients to try and fail on older, cheaper medications before approving newer or more specific treatments.

By operating independently, we remove the “insurance middleman” from your treatment decisions.

This gives our providers the clinical freedom to prescribe exactly what is best for you from day one, based on your unique history and needs—not based on an insurance company’s checklist. Our focus is entirely on your progress and well-being, without the distraction of administrative red tape.

3. True Privacy and Confidentiality

Many patients are surprised to learn that when they use health insurance, they are required to release their records to the insurer.

To get your sessions covered, a provider must assign you a mental health diagnosis (like Major Depressive Disorder or Generalized Anxiety Disorder) that becomes part of your permanent medical record. Insurance companies can also audit your files to determine if your treatment is “medically necessary.”

By paying privately, your data stays between you and your provider. We do not have to justify your care to a corporate claims adjuster. You are in control of your own health information.

4. You Can Still Use Your Insurance (Via Superbills)

Just because we don’t bill insurance directly doesn’t mean you can’t get reimbursed.

If you have a PPO plan or out-of-network benefits (which many plans in Connecticut include), you may be entitled to reimbursement for a significant portion of our fees.

We provide every patient with a monthly “Superbill”—a specialized medical receipt that contains all the codes insurers need. You simply upload this document to your insurance portal (or use an app like Reimbursify), and the insurance company sends the check directly to you.

5. Continuity of Care

In large hospital systems or clinics, high turnover is common. You might see a different nurse practitioner or doctor every time you log in.

At New Insights, we value the therapeutic relationship. You will see the same provider for your evaluation and your follow-ups. We get to know you. We track your progress together. This continuity is essential for effective medication management, especially when fine-tuning dosages for conditions like ADHD or bipolar disorder.

Invest in Your Peace of Mind

Your mental health affects everything—your job, your relationships, and your physical health. You deserve care that is prompt, personalized, and private.

If you are ready to bypass the waitlists and start a partnership with a provider who truly listens, we are ready to meet you.
